Climbing and Mountaineering

The TTC has a tradition of climbing and mountaineering dating back to the club's founding years.

The club has a core of active climbing-oriented members participating in a variety of weekend and multi-day climbing trips.

Typical trips are friendly club affairs covering alpine tramping, mountaineering, ski-mountaineering or sport rock-climbing.

We welcome all those wishing to develop their experience and contribute to the club's climbing scene.

Climbing trips

The best way to find out about trips is the fixture card. The online version is the most accurate. An excerpt is published each month in the Tramper club newsletter.

We also send out information to the ttc-climbing email group. To subscribe, simply email ttc-climbing-subscribe [snail] yahoogroups [period] com or visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ttc-climbing/

Specific considerations for climbing trips:

  • Climbing trip objectives often change at the last minute due to weather and safety considerations. It helps to be flexible and open-minded about what you want to achieve.
  • Typically, trip leaders will check that you have completed TTC's AIC or equivalent instruction.
  • For rock climbing-oriented trips, check with the trip leader on specific skills, experience and gear required.
  • We prefer people to join the TTC but this is not a requirement - at least for the first couple of trips!

Most years, TTC runs this popular course from June through September.

AIC targets trampers wishing to gain skills and confidence in the alpine environment as well as budding rock climbers and mountaineers.

The course features evening lectures, climbing instruction at local venues and four weekends in the mountain environment. It is regarded as one of the most comprehensive alpine instruction courses of any New Zealand tramping and mountaineering club.

For more information see the alpine instruction home page.
