Tramping Reports Wednesday 2006 Nov 22 to Tuesday 2006 Nov 28The Wednesday easy trip had 30 people in pleasant but windy conditions. We will be able to hear a radio report from a journalist who accompanied them sometime between Xmas and New Year. Barbara Marshall again ran the Aborta Contorta conservation trip to Ruapehu. There were 6 members who combined with a part from Toitoi Treckers. They had sun but gale force winds and were able to pull 348 trees in 1.5 days. The programme has been a great success and DoC say they will soon be able to move to a maintenance programme using contractors. Michael Taylor's usual dessert was very popular. They got caught up in the Taupo Challenge traffic on the way back to Wellington. Carol Kelly's party of 11 members had to beat a retreat from the gales on Quoin Ridge. They navigated their way down to the Eastern Hutt hut to find it already occupied by 2 RC hunters. With no tenting they managed to squeeze everyone either into the hut or under helicopter sling bags outside. They walked back out on Sunday in rain. The Kaweka circuit party are due out Tuesday. The pre-school family trip went to Raukawa Hut in the Orongorongo valley. 16 in the party with children ranging in age from 20 months to 10 years. Sun on Saturday, a bit murky on the Sunday. The Saturday medium trip left sunny Wellington to walk in the cloud in the Waikawa valley/Waitewaewae Peak before returning to sunny Wellington.4 members and 2 non-members. 8 members and 2 non-members enjoyed the plant identification exercise in Johnston Hill Reserve and Otari/Wilton Bush in second growth and pre-European forest remnant. The area is clearly benefitting from possum control 74 members and 5 non-members were out over the week. |
