Four members enjoyed a four day round trip in the northern Kawekas last weekend (25-28 November). A most enjoyable trip in good weather, except for high winds on the tops (but not as bad I believe as further south!!). Route: Pinks Hut - Middle Hill Hut - Venison Top - Mangaturutu Hut - Makino Hut - out to Makahu Road and Pinks Hut. On Wednesday two cyclists had a leisurely trip in the Karapoti, but got their feet wet because the old bridge before the car park was being demolished. The Saturday circular cycle trip from Eastbourne around Pencarrow and Baring Head and back over the Wainuiomata Hill was accompanied by 20 4WD vehicles. 8 members Six members on the M/F trip did some interesting navigation in the vicinity of Tent on Mangaone, while three members on the Medium trip struggled up a rather full Kapakapanui Stream as far as the middle forks before deciding to take on a dense kiekie belt for a difficult trip up a spur to the hut. On Sunday a very compatible group ascended to Kotuma, and appreciated the fairly strong wind which kept them from overheating on their climb. 8 members The Easy trip to Rangiwahia Hut had two days of perfect weather and a very high culinary standard was maintained for Saturday night’s dinner, acompanied by the sound of popping corks. The only problem on the trip was the high sidle over the slip going in which was not very pleasant. They came out on the Sunday via the Deadmans track, and got back to the car park by 3.30pm. A very pleasant trip, with good company! 4 members, 3 non members The M/F trip in the same area had snow on Friday night, but wonderful views of Ruapehu from the tops. They had two long days with lots of off track travel, but were very pleased with their navigation. 1 member, 1 non member Twelve families camped at Morisons Bush over the weekend, with lots of kayaking, some quick swims in the river, and a big campfire under the full moon. 50 people, including a number of new people. photos |
