There were 28 out on last Wednesday's ramble - a sunny and scenic circuit of Tinakori Hill. We pointed out where the quarry was and Bruce took a side expedition to view the cave. On Sunday 7 M/Fs found vehicular access to Walls Whare barred by a rampant Devil Creek. Diverting to Holdsworth they found Totara Flats reportedly inaccessible due to a flooded Totara Creek and so they executed merely a forlorn little loop in the Atiwhakatu valley - and were briefly snowed on for their sins. Medium Trip – 6 members went up to Dobsons, and had good weather until reaching Smiths Shelter. On Sunday, seven members enjoyed the sunshine for a great tramp around Whitireia Peninsula loop. Strong winds in the Ruahines prevented three people reaching Top Gorge Hut. They stayed in Longview instead. The preschoolers had a great time playing on a little sled during their trip to Tararua Lodge. Unfortunately the weather broke up at the end of the week. They had the services of John Russell who is a great cook, especially Christmas puddings. 7 members, 7 non members Alpine Instruction at Tararua Lodge covered avalanche awareness with lecture and practical on Saturday depite the bad weather. Sunday covered advanced ropes techniques in the lodge before heading home early Sunday afternoon. |
