The Wednesday Winter Solstice party saw 39 people celebrating in the Northland Guide Hall. They also celebrated several birthdays, and heard a review of the history of the solstice celebrations. Two groups went walking before the event. On Saturday the trip included a “mysterious” track which lead between the East Whakanui and the Whakanui tracks, found recently by Peter Jagger and Michael Bartlett, complete with old markers. Several other obscure tracks were followed by the 9 members. Three intrepid trampers spent the night at Kapakapanui hut, with a warm fire and some snow. They had quite an adventure getting back to the cars when after making two river crossings found the third uncrossable, so struck off through blackberry and gorse for an old farm track which led them to their destination, but taking 1 ˝ hours. The Winter Solstice party at Tararua Lodge attracted 21 people. Because of the conditions some people had to leave their cars at the Chateau and walk all the way up, but all enjoyed the party. Some managed a little skiing. |
