On Wednesday five very hardy members completed one quarter of the planned City to Sea trip before calling the trip off because of the appalling weather. The Saturday trip set out up Tane’s Track in Tunnel Gully, but had difficulty finding the turnoff because a landslide had obliterated it. The conditions were miserable so they did a loop in Tunnel Gully. 3 members, 1 non member An unofficial M/F trip on Saturday took six members into the Maungakotukutuku Valley and up a ridge north of Manganui. It was cold but dry most of the day. Four skiers had a wonderful walk on a clear starlit night up to Tararua Lodge. Saturday was very good until the wind picked up, and they were all safely back at the Lodge by 11 am, where they stayed until time to go home. They helped 8 members of the Alpine Club who came and rested on their way to and from their hut, which they had a very hard time getting to. A SAR exercise in which a charter launch with a party on board struck a rock and sunk at Oterahanga Bay, saw five Club members as victims, some with horrific wounds, acting out their parts, and two members in the search parties, in bad conditions during the overnight exercise. |
