Tramping Reports Wednesday 2008 Aug 13 to Tuesday 2008 Aug 19The 5 members on the Wednesday medium trip enjoyed much better weather than expected for their tramp from Kaitoke to Dobsons and managed to stay dry. The Wednesday ramble had 7 members and lovely weather. The Wednesday E/M trip had no takers and so the disappointed leader decided to go for a walk on her own. She will be very offended if she gets a similar response to her next Wednesday trip on 10 September. The moonlight southern crossing was cancelled owing to the weather. The AIC was cancelled owing avalanche risk and the closure of the Bruce Rd.Five of them went for a tramp in metre deep snow to visit Jumbo hut where they took two hours to get the fire going. The rest practiced their belay techniques on the grassy slope near the Rose Garden on the Sunday. The previous ski week had only six people. Heaps of snow means the lodge is buried up to the kitchen window sill and is hard to spot. Skiing most days but kept off the steeper slopes owing to avalanche risk. The M/F trip had 5 members and switched to Sunday for a 10 hour tramp in the Kotumu/Peak area. Highlights included pioneering a new route through steep eroded country,peculiar geology, a herd of goats, and a herd of deer. Sun and no wind on the top of Peak. The Sunday medium trip to Mt Reeves was postponed to make way for the Saturday medium trip to Mt Reeves but that trip was cancelled owing to the leader coming down with a cold. The replacement trip was cancelled on Saturday morning after the two participants were dumped on by a lot of hail before leaving home. The Sunday easy trip had 12 members for a walk through Trelissick Park with Devonshire tea at the leaders residence. Despite the cancellations a total of 46 members. |
