Accommodation was booked as the base for running a variety of trips, including one, two, four and six-day trips at trip grades EM, M, MF, F, and Alpine.
Each grade had a ‘hub coordinator’ to help with planning and securing trip leaders.
Other activities possible were botanising, bouldering, photography, walking, gourmet cooking, and social nights back at base.
Joining the expedition
Members indicated their interest in taking part during the first week, second week, or both weeks as either a trip leader or trip member.
by filling in the online Expression of Interest form,
To keep the meet organisation and costings as straightforward as possible the accommodation cost was worked out on 3 main groups.
Group 1: 8 nights,
group 2: 6-7 nights and
group 3: for the full 2 weeks of 15 nights.
If you went on overnight trips you still paid for the nights you were not there, ensuring a secured a bunk if the weather did not cooperate.
There was a duty roster to keep the lodges tidy and clean, so please all lend a hand.
There were resupply trips from Greymouth to top up provisions during the stay, including resupply of personal food and bread.
There was a planning meeting each evening at 8 pm at the Canterbury Mountaineering Lodge to discuss next days tramping plans with update on weather forecast.
A trip registration form was used for every trip run.
Meals
Breakfast and lunches are BYO. You will need to bring lunch food for tramping or
base lodge lunches. There is not a lot of fridge space so please items that don't
need refrigeration. There is no freezer capacity.
Evening meal arrangements are not finalised and there will be a follow up email on how we can get this to work. However, we would like to have a group dinner at the local cafe for the first night Saturday 6 March if that suits people. Please let Cathy know if you'd like to join this dinner.
Milk made from milk powder, tea bags and instant coffee will be provided. If you
want plunger coffee BYO and a plunger if you have a travel one.
Provided also hand soap and hand sanitiser.
There are two options for eating out at night
The Wobbly Kea(approve sites) Lunch and dinner closes 7 30pm
There is also the Store(approve sites) café, closes at 5pm. It has café lunch food and basic supplies.
Those intending to do overnight trips need to bring their own dinners for those trips.
Please bring
Bring your usual tramping gear including towel toiletries and earplugs
one toilet roll per person to stock the lodges
a pillow case
a tea towel each
For overnight/multi day people - please bring a cooker, billies, and washing up stuff if you have them, and especially a gas canister.
Transport
The van is travelling down on Saturday 6 March and returning on Sunday 21 March and is full.
If you are travelling down by car and have a spare seat please use this list to let people know.
If you can help out, it would be appreciated but we understand that many people are in the South Island for longer than two weeks.
The alternatives to get to Arthurs Pass are plane, train or bus to Christchurch and then book a seat on the shuttle service that goes through Arthurs Pass to the West Coast. West Coast Shuttle Service or Atomic Travel
Expedition fixture card
Overnight and multi-day trips
Trips will be undertaken when the weather obliges and people are available and can be run more than once
Trip numbers may be limited due to the small number of bunks in some huts
People should bring cookers, gas, billies, sleeping mats (in case of full huts) and all food for themselves. As each trip gets underway, party gear such as cookers, gas and billies will be more efficiently organised
The evening meals required are indicated by the number of nights away on each trip. Don’t rely on getting dehy meals from the local store. Come prepared – a good option is dehy meals from Bivouac with the FMC discount
Full wet weather gear is essential
Tents are required where camping is indicated. The club has tents available.
Make sure you have a Backcountry Hut Pass or enough hut tickets to cover your planned trips.
Times are based on DOC information. See below for links to DoC information
It is important that the walks undertaken and the names of those on them are recorded in the trip diary as a record of the Arthurs Pass Meet and for safety purposesIf you have a PLB please bring it
