Wednesday April 30th
E tramp over the McKenzie track starting at Kowhai Street led by Michele Dickson. 9M
After the last wetting shower of rain, nine of us set off up the MacKenzie Track from Eastbourne village still clad with parkas and other layers for the cold day. A usual brief stop for the view at the top preceded a morning tea stop beside Butterfly Creek part way along to the junction with the Kowahai St Track. On to the picnic area for lunch where a light breeze found its way through the trees. The bright red of a stinkhorn fungus and ripe fruit of the tank lily Astelia, caught our attention before the up and over of the Kowhai St. Track and return along the coast to the village to end a pleasant trip.
EM Tramp over Heke Reserve, Silversky, Skyline, Huntleigh Park led by Muriel Christianson. 5M
Five club members set off from the Ngaio Railway Station, hoping to survive the Southerly wind on the Skyline Track. We walked along the bush track through the Heke Reserve, from just above the Ngaio Railway Station, descending Thatcher Crescent to Silverstream Road. A further bush track behind the Playcentre in Silverstream Road led us to the Silversky track, a well graded zigzag track rising up to the Pylon Road heading to the Skyline Walkway. The Southerly hit us with a blast above the Silversky Track. On reaching the Skyline Track, we decided on a change of plan due to the strength of the Southerly wind, which could have impeded our ability to remain upright. We returned to descend down the Silversky Track, retracing our steps. One trip member returned to her car on Silverstream Road. Four of us climbed up through Huntleigh Park, enjoying the local bush walk to meet with the Korimako Track where we settled for our lunch break. We returned to Ngaio Station via Huntleigh Park Way, Heke Street and the bush walk down to Ngaio Station. Our shortened trip was 10 kilometres, and four and a half hours. Muriel Christianson (leader), Penny Salmond, Janice Tijsen, Diane Kerse, Jean Morgan
M Makara Peak Circuit tramp led by Brian Hasell. 12M
12 Members enjoyed this Medium Trip. This Makara Peak Circuit was a 6 ½ hour, 18.4 km circular walk on sheltered tracks visiting the southern edges of the Bike Park and returning via Wrights Hill. MF tramp Wall’s Whare going to Cone Hut - Tutuwai Hut - .843. - Mt Reeves. - Cone Track led by Lynne White. 4M Four members walked from Waiohine Gorge road end to Cone Hut then towards Tutuwai Hut before heading up the spur just past Reeves Stream. After some initial bush bashing, we found a footpad that came and went, leading us up onto Reeves Track. We continued on to Mt Reeves just because it’s there and then back-tracked to take the ridge route across to Cone Track and back down to the carpark. The trip started in rain but this stopped after about half an hour and the rest of the day was fine. 9.5h.
Multi-day Tramp
ANZAC Dawn Service on Mount Hector leaving on Thursday 24th and coming out on Saturday the 26th led by Trent Corbett. 14 NM
Trent was too sick to go but friends took over and in perfect conditions a dawn service was held under the cross on Mt Hector. !4 people attended the service. It went so well that there is talk of repeating the event next year.
Sunday
E tramp Northland byways, bush and Town Belt led by Chris Horne. 6M
A four-hour trip along routes off streets as much as possible. Several surprises - even for members fairly familiar with the area. Morning tea in the forecourt of Northland Community Centre was a chance to study displays explaining Northland's history. Lunch at the start of Albemarle Road Scenic Reserve preceded our walk up the track beside the creek. The finale was the steep descent of the Town Belt from Stellin Park to Tinakori Rd.
