SF Trip ‘Kaukau, Skyline Loop, back to Khandallah Park’ led by Diana Munster, Wed 04/6 2M
The original trip was to the Wainuiomata Water Catchment, and was to have been led by David McNabb; unfortunately David was sick and I was asked to lead the trip. Due to the forecast for heavy rain and very strong wind plus a lack of shelter and escape routes, I chose to offer the Skyline Loop trip instead. The trip dwindled from 7 people to just 2 of us.
Mike Wespel-Rose and I left Khandallah Park at 8am aiming to do the Skyline to Johnston Hill before the rain really set in and the wind strengthened. We had lunch under the wonderful shelter at Troupe picnic area (BTW the hand drier in the toilet is great for warming cold hands). We then went up and over via devious means to the Silversky Track to Hunterleigh Park, along bush tracks to Bells Track (where we had hoped to ascend to Kaukau) but the wind was very strong (it was 102km/hr on Kaukau) and rain had increased to a steady downpour and so we opted for a low level route (tracks and streets) back to Khandallah Park arriving at 3pm. It was a good day out especially for testing parkas!
