Lees Grove to Lowry Bay/Belmont Trig Loop/Western Hills/Akatarua River

location name? filename.gpx Δ

Wednesday 3 September

Easy:Lees Grove to Lowry Bay

4 keen trampers set out on a very sunny day to climb to Lowry. The bush was chilly but going uphill helped us get warm. We spotted several patches of the Drymoanthus Orchid but no flowers yet. We enjoyed cups of tea and almond slice at the bench overlooking the harbour and had chats with several other trampers. We arrived at the Earina Autumnalis orchid patch for lunch with only the sight of old flowers. As the name implies they are autumn flowering. Back along Rata Ridge and down Ferry Rd track brought us to our cars. The best circular trip there is!! Thanks to Michele, Lois and Jean for your company.

Easy Medium: Belmont Trig Loop

Seven of us gathered at the Cornish Street entrance to Belmont Regional Park to do the reprise of a previous washed out attempt at Belmont Trig. The day was perfect this time, still , sunny with clear light blues skies We stopped at Baked Beans Bend for an informative discussion of the Edmonds Cookery Book inspired by “Walnut Pride”. Our puff up to the trig through regenerating bush included occasional views of the west out to the Makara Wind Farm. The early lunch stop by Belmont Trig saw a newly installed picnic table with stunning views out to the Wellington Heads and beyond. Coming down the north side of Mount Belmont there were delighted exclamations at the sight of Kapiti hovering in the distance over Tītahi Bay. Taking the 4 wheel drive track down towards Stratton Street we turned off onto the Otanga track down towards Korokoro dam admiring the dense Rewarewa forest on our way. Back down to Cornish Street made this an enjoyable 5 hour trip in great company! Penny Hoy-Mack, Muriel Christianson, Justin Kerr, Pip Newton, Janice Tijsen, Vic Armstrong, Janet Dobbie .

Medium: Oakleigh St-Tin Hut-Horokiwi-Bridle Track-Main Ridge-Bill's track

A big crowd of 25 trampers gathered on a gorgeous, sunny morning at the Oakleigh Street entrance to Belmont Regional Park. Our route was mostly on less-familiar tracks. Not far below the Korokoro Dam, we turned uphill on a steepish track, to visit the Tin Hut with its collection of stolen road signs. Then more uphill to the Ridge Track, and down to the Korokoro West Stream. A few minutes up the stream, we turned left to puff our way up a 200-metre climb on an unlabelled but well-formed track to the Horokiwi ridge. Along the road for about 700 metres, then plunge back down to the stream on the wide, easy Horokiwi Bridleway. A lunch spot at the bottom of the track provided a leisurely bask in sunshine. The homeward route was back down Korokoro West Stream, up Ridge Track for 30 minutes until turning off onto Bill's Track, a steep downhill shortcut back to the Korokoro Dam. We ended with a final climb up to Oakleigh St. 6h10, 700m elevation gain, an excellent Medium route

This was the team: Joan Basher (leader), Andy Leslie, John Willett, Cheryl McDonald, Angela Vanderpoel, Carolyn Jenkins, Chris Ward, Ann McIlroy, Jim Gibbons, Mary Kane, Lois Buckrell, Trish Gardiner-Smith, Cathy Wylie, Marilyn Richards, Rachel Fry, Peter Morten, Colin Hoare, Bob Buckle, Linda Beckett, Leonore Hoke, Karen Vaughan, Brian Dobbie, Robert Munster, Katherine Close, Joanne Gapes

Medium Fit:Akatarua River

The MF trip did a circuit in the Akatarawa from the Maungkotukutuku Road. It went up to Titi and then into the dark depths of the Akatarawa River catchment. We returned via a spur up to .613 and then along towards the main track descending from Maunganui. 8 members and 7 fun filled hours on a sunny day.
