Wednesday 25th September
E Part Southern Walkway led by Jean Morgan. 5M and 1NM
We set off from the Mt. Vic bus tunnel for the shortened Southern walkway. All arrived from various directions at the same time to begin the trip. The rain held off and all were able to meander a little, viewing some animals at the zoo and the beautiful gardens at the Truby King site until we walked down to Island Bay.
EM Remutaka forest, Cattle Ridge circuit Dave Reynolds. 11M
Eleven members enjoyed a good day in the bush on Cattle Ridge. Conditions were good for tramping no rain and little wind. Underfoot conditions were better than expected given the recent rain.
M Waiotauru River tracks led by Robin Chesterfield. 5M
With the road through to Otaki Forks campground graded and the Waiotauru track recently cut, travel to the Waiotauru Forks was as expected, with the couple of side stream slips to negotiate. The climb up from the forks was slow with plenty of ground movement underfoot, with lunch at pt 472. From pt 472 with some cloud and light drizzle, it took another three hours through to the Pukeatua track. The mud on this track that forms part of Te Araroa increases each year. Five members on the trip which took just under 9 hours.
MF Tauwharenīkau - Mt Marchant led by John Dement. 11M
We departed Kiwi Ranch at 8:00 climbing to the Puffer Saddle before descending Smiths Creek. On reaching the Tauwharenīkau River we headed up river to Marchant Stream. The Marchant Stream was easily crossed removing the only possible major problem for the trip. Once across we started up the spur towards the Marchant Ridge. After 850 meters of off track climb through good bush and lunch along the way we reached the ridge top at 14:00. The wind and showers on the ridge top saw all the parkers appear. Once off the ridge top the parkers were put away for the day before completing the final leg back to the cars arriving at 18:00 making a 10 hour round trip.
Sunday
