Totara Creek - High Ridge - Powell

Map Sheet S26 - Carterton
A prompt, early start from Wellington (picking up people along the way) resulted in the party of 12 leaving Holdsworth Lodge road-end at 8.15am in promising weather. The group nimbly covered the Gentle Annie track and descended the rooty, trenched track down to Totara Creek, where a nibble and drink were taken in a sunny patch.
From the down track our route was up a spur directly across the stream (on the true right). Starting at approximately 420m, this spur leads steadily up to point 1134m on High Ridge. It is mainly open bush with some animal tracks and hints of a shooters' route to make the going straightforward. Once on the High Ridge top we moved along under breezy blue skies to just below point 1253m where we had lunch in the sun on the eastern side of the ridge to get out of the chilly westerly.
After a pleasant break we continued along the High Ridge to the Mt Holdsworth Track and were drawn upward to appreciate the full views available from the trig (1470m). A small ambitious splinter group went off to visit Isabelle (1385m), while the rest of us headed down past a crowded Powell Hut to reach the carpark at 5pm.
This trip was a novel way to get up Mt Holdsworth, and with superb weather, made for an enjoyable day's outing.
Party members were: Michael Arnold, Margaret Conal, Steven Epstein, Hugh Fyson, Teri Goh, Michael Hartley, Peter Jagger, Bernard Molloy, Sieny Pollard, Dave Reynolds, Tim Stone and Bill Allcock (leader and scribe).
