14th Annual Golf Tournament - Ohakune
18-19 April 1998
The organisers of this event ensured that all who could be present had a thoroughly enjoyable, mostly fine, weekend (except for the golf). We were sorry that convenor Ray Burrell could not be with us and trust that he is well on the road to full recovery. Frank Dement undertook his management role with his customary flair.
The principle event - what might be termed the Tararua Open, had 6 competitors. During a torrid tussle in which no sheep were actually killed and where the lush rough produced many ways of adding to one's score, the prizewinners - surprise, surprise - were as follows:
Dave Cracknell won Best Nett, the Putting Plate (at 31 just nosing out Andy), the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin. Betty Souter won the Best Nett, the Longest Drive (and the Shortest) and Nearest the Pin in the Women's section. The order of merit in the Stableford section was-Bill Gates, Frank Dement, Arthur Williment, Andy Andersen. Andy also managed to have more golf than the others (but not by much). The prize giving and socialising in the evening at Shirley Rian's place was, as always, well organised and an excellent catch-up session. Naomi, Shirley and Betty were able to recount their prowess at the Holiday Park putting range. Betty proclaimed the following day that she wanted to have another 'go at Ruapehu' (one of the putting holes to the uninitiated).
Dave, Betty S. and Arthur ventured forth on Sunday morning for another game and each improved on their previous performance.
Betty S. would dearly love some competition - she hates hogging all the prizes in her section and watch this space because next year the whole programme is due to be bigger, brighter and (if it were possible) better - with a new venue which just might be Takapau - so come out of your hiding places folks, and next time give Dave a run for his money.
