Mangaterere - Sayer's Hut - Mt. Waiohine - Bumps 810m & 667m
Saturday 4 March 2000
Michael Bartlett planned this trip and as far as is known it had never been done previously by a TTC party.
Today, Michael (with an injury) with Nina Cook and Syd Moore did the "inside circuit" with the aim of making a route through the badly overgrown dracophyllum belt north of bump 810m.
The total party of 14 left the Mangaterere road end about 9am on a warm morning. Firstly up through overgrown bracken, then a steady climb in open forest to the top ridge, south to bump 772m. Michael, Nina and Syd left us, going south for bump 810m etc.
The rest of us descended west to Sayer's Hut and to the Waiohine River for water refuelling.
Now for the biggest effort of the day. The climb east of about 630m/2030ft on an untracked route to Mt. Waiohine in rising temperatures meant sweat! Across Sayer Creek I led south on an old animal track to avoid supplejack and kiekie, of which there was plenty. Then back gradually east to the fern belt. Then Bernard and Robin lead through a punga section and up a very steep grade. At a clearing about 430m we had lunch. After lunch another steep section in open forest with two direction changes. At the ridge top Colin checked direction - more north than east. A minor height loss before ascending to the small, open and rocky Mt. Waiohine. There were cloudless views of the Main Tararua Range, Mt. Holdsworth, Mitre etc.
I then found a good route in forest, east of scrub, so we had good progress to a minor bump before bump 810m. Thanks to our three friends we had a clear route east, passed the old path to Carterton road end, now forbidden. A short descent to a saddle before the last climb of the day to bump 667m.
Then I led off wrongly north-east instead of north. The good spur came into thick growth lower down which was slow going. Bernard and Robin did good route-finding to guide us finally to the Mangaterere Stream and car park.
Thanks Michael for suggesting a very varied and unusual trip.
