90th Anniversary tramp, Turere/Wakanui off-track
Saturday, 4th July 2009
Colin promised us 90 years’ worth of rain and mud for the anniversary Saturday M/F trip, and we certainly had our share of muck and wet. We went in from Hine Road, Wainuiomata, up the Nikau Track. From there we spent a nostalgic 8 hours-plus on sections of the McKerrow and Wakanui Tracks, with the usual spectacular descents (the first from bump 680 on the McKerrow track) and ascents (the last from Turere Stream up onto the East Whakanui) totalling 1200 metres. As planned, much of the day was off-track with plenty of exploration. Colin presented each of us with an official laminated anniversary map printed with our names - thank you, Colin, for a day to remember.
