Waitangi Weekend trip to Mt Hector
Feb 06 -08 2015
'' Led a party of nine (all members) left Otaki Forks at midday on Friday a bit nervous about the predicted southerly change, having heard reports of temperatures of minus 4 degrees at Kime Hut! They weren't sure how many people were staying at Field Hut on Friday night, but there were at least 40. So lots of double bunking and not an inch of floor space. Two party members returned to the road-end on Saturday, but the remaining seven continued on to Kime, which was much less crowded, and did a side trip to climb Hector. Fortunately the sub-zero temperatures didn't eventuate. On Sunday they were treated to magical scenes of mountains floating on clouds, though it wasn't so much fun descending below the clouds into the murk. A tired but happy bunch... ''
