15 & 16 June
We arrived at the TTC clubrooms at 9am and drove to the Waiohine Valley road end. We took the Cone Hut track and started off at a steady pace. The track was mostly uphill, then largely downhill and finally flat as we walked along the valley. The weather was looking a bit gloomy but we were lucky that there wasn't much wind or rain. We all reached Tutuwai Hut at different times. Noah and Arlo, along with Lucia H, Annie and Amy, tented next to the hut, while Flynn and Stuart tented on the paddock below the hut. For dinner our group had Daniel's special tortellini, with tomato sauce; just what we needed after a long tramp. Other groups had spaghetti, ramen and soups, cooked on our portable camping stoves. The adults brought cheese and crackers for us all to share. A group of us stayed up till 9pm (2am city time) and had fun playing card games, including mafia and last card, made some hot chocolate, then tried to ignore the sound of adults (probably Stu) snoring as we fell asleep.
On Sunday we walked up to and along the sunny ridgeline of Mt Reeves, with a beautiful view of undisturbed mountain ranges all around. We took an old track along the way, passing through many different layers of bush. All three groups consecutively got a little lost. Someone left behind his walkie-talkie (Stu again?) and had to go back to get it. Overall the tramp to Tutuwai Hut was great fun especially with such a range of people of all ages. I really look forward to future TTC tramps!
