While the land remains, the inhabitants are gone.

E mihi ana ki a koutou

TTC is a founding member of Federated Mountain Clubs. Now the new executive is in place I am looking forward to being able to work with FMC to the benefit of our club and the wider outdoors community.

I welcome your feedback on issues I intend to raise (and in some cases raise again) with FMC. These are:

  • A focus on serving FMC’s constituent clubs and their members
  • Returning the focus of FMC advocacy to issues that benefit the outdoors community
  • Continuing of the FMC’s focus on promoting access to stewardship land through its Forgotten Lands campaign. See also: “The Conversation’s” article co-authored by the new FMC Vice President How New Zealand’s review of ecologically important land could open the door to more mining on conservation land; FMC’s unformed legal roads (Same as SH1) campaign: and access campaigns that also promote conservation, such as Wild Rivers Park and Remarkables National Park
  • Promoting the development and adoption of common policies across all outdoor clubs in areas such as the participation of youth and leaders on club trips
  • Building FMC’s membership through individual membership of its member clubs, rather than through the existing ‘FMC individual supporter’ membership category
  • Making Backcountry magazine available electronically (as is our Tramper), to reduce the costs of printing and posting hard copies and potentially reduce the cost of FMC membership

I hope we will have a talk by the new FMC President at club night and be able to hear more about the state of outdoor recreation in Aotearoa.

Ngā mihi nui
Simon
