He iti te Mokoroa nāna te Kahikatea i kakati
While the Mokoroa grub is small, it cuts through the Kahikatea, in other words, “There is power in small things.”
This whakataukī is about the little things in our lives, the things we don't pay attention to and the things that seem insignificant, which are in fact quite powerful.
Tēnā koutou i roto i ngā āhuatanga o te wā. Greetings to you all and the circumstances of the time.
The recent memorial clubnight in honour of Peter Barber had the quintessential club spirit and feeling, and was thoroughly enjoyable. It reminded me that that spirit was what Peter brought to all his activities in the club. A mihi nui to all who made this happen - the MC, Belynda Jack, the organisers organised by Liz Martin, the Social Committee, the band and bandmaster Mike Wespel-Rose, and all the speakers. It was very special to have Mary and Jacqui in attendance.
I have updates on a few activities.
The General Committee has just met. Due to the small number on the committee it has taken time to get a quorum together. And on the night we failed to reach the quorum, so we will be carrying out some of our governance ‘virtually’.
We are still seeking a Treasurer, and would greatly benefit from more people joining the General Committee. It's a great way to support your club.
I propose to hold a special general meeting to add flexibility to the club rules by setting a time limit of six years for service in any combination of officer roles and three years each for service as President or Vice President. Time served as a member of the General Committee is limited to six years, but if my propsal is passed will no longer restrict time spent as an officer. This arrangement would continue the current tenure limitations while supporting General Committee Members to become officers. If you’d like to have input into the draft changes please contact me.
The Incident Review Committee will meet next week to consider its draft report. We are very grateful to all those who provided us with feedback about the trip. The winter activities of Incident Review Committee members have drawn out our meeting schedule, slowing our progress, but I anticipate the report will be released soon.
The website review report was received prior to the AGM. I asked the Website Review Team to number the recommendations in the report so they are clearly identifiable, to enable us to trace the work we do on each. The website team also prioritised the recommendations, to ensure the important recommendations are actioned first. The web team's actions in response to the website review are to:
- Review the report and the recommendations to ensure the recommendations are clear and understood, and that they are in scope for the website. Clarifications will be sought from the website review team if necessary
- Develop options for each of the recommendations. Recommend options to the General Committee and the Website Review team
- Develop a project plan to implement the selected options
- Implement the options.
The web team has commenced with step 1. Each of these steps above will be worked through. I have requested the continued support and input from the Website Review Team.
Finally, there was not a President’s Kōrero in the October Tramper, not because it was late; it was in fact very early, but because it was not accepted for publication. You can read the article here on the website.
Winter seems to have been short and warm, but I have appreciated getting out in it, and the snow I’ve found. I particularly enjoyed the long weekend up at the lodge, which included a walk up to the crater.
