Trip Reports – Wednesday 9.11.05 to Tuesday 15.11.05

Wednesday: It was a hot trip along from Woburn to Days Bay, but the group of 19 members and two non-members took their time, and most caught the ferry back to Wellington.

Two members battled high winds along the tops from Howletts Hut, but dropped down the first available ridge for relief. This was a very physical trip, with two distinct climbs.

The Family trip was changed to a walk up Kapakapanui from Mangaone because it is exam time. Four members.

The Work Party at Cone Hut painted inside the hut and toilet, cut lots of wood and patched the chimney. Thank you to the eight members, led by Michael Bartlett.

Two medium/fit trampers took the Whakanui Track into the Orongorongo Valley, returning via a spur above Telegraph Creek. They reported that the benched track used for the construction of the waterworks tunnel has been cleared.

The medium trip on Saturday found the Phillips Stream forks from above the Dobson track, and returned via Bump 705. The four members had an interesting and quite long tramp.

David Burson took 11 members and six non-members on a variety of tracks, including bush tramway, and stream boulder hopping, on Sunday in the Karapoti area.

The Sunday mountain bike trip had the four members a little apprehensive approaching the Rock Garden, but all negotiated it safely for an exhausting six hour trip.

The rock climbing team of three members and one non-member reported that Castle Hill was a very scenic and interesting area including an underground stream they walked up. The rocks looked like Henry Moore sculptures. Everyone exceeded their previous best grades and all succeeded on a Grade 20 climb. Unfortunately the main climbing area was closed because of bad behaviour of other climbers.
