Activity summary: Wednesday 2014 Jul 23 to Tuesday 2014 Jul 29

Wednesday:

David Ogilvie led Northern walkway variations (M). 18 members left Ngaio for Kaukau via the back of Broadmeadows, then went down from Crows Nest, through Huntleigh Reserve to Crofton Downs. Then they climbed up the new Silversky track, over the saddle into the Horse Paddock, up towards the ridge line to the track that leads back down to the Flaxy Clearing for lunch. Then up the valley, crossed the playing fields to the Albemarle track and on to Tinakori using a variety of tracks, before dropping into the Ngaio Gorge and back up to the carpark. They spent almost 7 hours in mostly dry but cold weather, with a strong SW wind on the tops.

Sheena Hudson led a walk to Colonial Knob (EM). 9 members one non-member. Best place to be tramping ...only a few spots of rain although cold strong winds on the tops. Great views and lots of birds in the bush.

Jenny Lewis led a BBB Kaiwharawhara - Otari Bush. A pleasant trip mainly along the Kaiwharawhara stream with lunch in the shelter at the Troup picnic area of Otari. 8 members.

Weekend:

Anne Matthews led AIC snow one, with 9 trainees and 7 instructors.

Family:

Anne Dowden was to lead a Family trip City to Sea, Berhampore south. No report.

Saturday:

Colin Cook led a Saturday off-track exploration (MF). Four members and one non-member explored the upper reaches of Prince Stream west branch in Pigeon Bush. Access to the headwaters from the ridgeline track at the 600 m contour was found to be quite feasible despite the scrubby vegetation. At about 240 m altitude, in country that looked quite benign on the topo map, they stumbled across but fortunately not over a 10 m high waterfall.

Dave Reynolds led 8 on the Saturday trip (M) which was in the Otaki Forks area due to predicted gale force winds on the Eastern side of the Range. They went up the Waiotauru R, then ascended a spur to bump 692 and close to bump 710 on the Pukeatua ridge, then back over bumps 550 and 476 to the car park.

Sunday:

Diana Barnes led a Mt Kaukau walk (E, afternoon). Three members. Because it was very cold and windy at the top of Kaukau, they did the shortened version, coming down a more sheltered track into Khandallah Park and back to the beginning – a pleasant two hour trip.

Total 50 members and 2 non members
