Spicer, East Harbour RP, Blake, Thompson

Wednesday 4th

Karori Park, Lunch, Carole Haigh
Spicer Valley, E, Hadley Bond
Starting from the Spicer Valley car park, we did a circuit of Spicer Botanical Park - often bypassed. We then ascended the Te Ara Tai Tonga Track to the wind farm access road, joining the track through the Spicer Forest to climb up to the farm, and took the Seven Pines Track back to the car park. A small group of greenhood orchids (good specimens) was seen toward the end of the trip. Nine club members: Anne and Hadley Bond (leader), Jennifer Roberts, Peter Nixon, Lois Hope, Barbara Ogilvie, Margaret Foden, Jeanette Martin and Daphne Dashfield. Info about the walk

Lowry Bay hills and beyond, M, Carolyn Jenkins
Mainly bush tracks , with views. 9 members. We were very lucky with the weather, the rain stopped and the sun came out. We met at Callaghan Institute and went up the overgrown semi firebreak above the Leighton Gully track- to the green carpets at the masts. There we admired the wide views from south Wellington to Haywards.   We headed  south along the ECNZ road, crossed over the bridge on Wainui Hill, and continued along the Main Ridge track, and on down Puriri track to Wainuiomata. We continued along the road  for about 10 minutes, to the top of Kowhai Street, then entered the East Harbour Regional park via the unformed legal access – and climbed up to the Lowry seat where we had lunch. After lunch, we headed back north along the Main Ridge track and then down behind Lowry Bay and up to Point Howard,  -  back to top of Wainui Hill,  and to the cars. Total trip time  approx. 6 ½  hours Topo Map

Blake, Mitre Flats, SF, David Ogilvie
Eleven members and one non-member and a dog started walking from The Pines at 9 am.  It took 20 min to reach the house and another 20 to the start of the Barra track.   We went along the track for about 5-10 minutes and climbed a spur on to the south end of Blue Range.  We reached the summit of Blake for lunch, then walked north for about 10 min and headed down a good spur to the Barra track and back out to The Pines; a 8 h 15 min mild, cloudy, dry day. Saturday 7th

Thompson from the North, M, Bill Alcock
On Saturday six intrepid people completed a seven hour circuit to the north shoulder of Thompson from North Manakau Rd. The trip involved steam travel; off track travel; mist and showers; slippery mud; and a neglected DOC track with wooden signs dating from the NZ Forest Service days.. Conversations were enjoyable and smiles were prevalent upon the return to the cars. Bill Allcock Topo Map
