Wednesday

Howard Livingston' led The easy walk today was most of the Southern Walkway going from south to north with a tail wind. From Island Bay to Houghton Bay there was a strong cross wind whipping up the sand. The temperature ranged from 10 to 11.9 degrees but felt like 6 degrees! Fourteen walkers started and most peeled off along the way, to enable the Gold Card to be used for homeward transport, while three reached Oriental Bay, with 14 members

David Ogilvie' led a trip to Mick and Thompson walking from the entrance to the Waitohu Quarry at 09:00. Much of the route up the Waitohu River was very muddy or swampy. We reached the beginning of the climb at 10:00 and the main ridge beside the toy aeroplane at 12:20. We then walked south to Mick (877 m), arriving about 12:35, and back to the toy aeroplane for lunch in a SE wind at 6°C. It was too cold to look for the plane crash. From there we walked north along the ridge on a fairly well-marked route to Thompson (709 m) at 15:15 for pm tea, then followed the new track down to the river, arriving back at the cars at around 18:00, making it a 9 h day, with 11 members

David McNabb' This trip was a re-run of the trip I led last Saturday. We started from Norberts Creek, Kaitoke and followed the spur north of Norberts Track up to Warrens Saddle, then up to the 'Golden Road' and down to the Eastern 4 Return was off track up a spur west of the road, returning to the road via Warrens Saddle and down to the cars via Norberts Track. Cloudy cool weather, with light rain later. Time taken was 7¼ hours, with 8 members

Saturday

Dave Reynolds led an Old Whakanui circuit where conditions wet and misty, standing morning tea and lunch, with 3 members
