Te Whiti Riser/East Harbour Regional Park/Tangata Maunaga/Mangahao Flats Hut/Butcher – Cattle Ridge
Wednesday
E Trip ‘Te Whiti Riser’ led by David Campbell, Wed 29/3
4 members climbed the Te Whiti Riser and back – a 3 hour trip.
EM Trip ‘Percy Scenic Reserve’ led by Carolyn Jenkins, Wed 29/3
Cancelled as everyone except for 3 of them felt the weather was too bad.
M Trip ‘East Harbour Regional Park’ led by Jim Gibbons, Wed 29/3
The forecast was for cold gale force southerly winds with some showers; winter weather, not March. However the East Harbour Regional Park is reasonably sheltered so 5 club members turned up at Days Bay dressed for the cold. We went up the Kereru track and down a trap line into Gollans Stream, then up the other side to the ridge south of Pt360. The trap lines on the Eastern side of Gollans are not often used and can be overgrown and difficult to follow. We dropped back into Gollans just north of pt360 and back to Days Bay on the Korimako track. Gollans Creek was up with the recent rain, but not difficult to cross. Jim Gibbons (leader) Diane Morgan, David Fisher, Leonore Hoke, Jane Mautner.
SF Trip ‘Tangata Maunaga’ led by Helen Beaglehole, Wed 29/3
This trip was to go to the top (or close to the top) of Tanagata Maunaga, out of Otaki. But faced with freezing rain and general cold, I made a late decision and cancelled it. Some then reconvened at Joan and Reid Basher’s for coffee and still-warm home-made scones. As we watched the rain driving up the harbour I had no doubt where I would prefer to be.
Two of the party members, however, were rather more intrepid. Janette Roberts writes:
Two members decided to revise the planned SF trip on Wednesday. Given the weather, guiding principles were to stay in the bush and on a track not too far away. After some casting about we settled on the Remutaka Forest Park’s Clay Ridge. We were a bit alarmed by the height of Graces stream at the ford, so parked on the road side of it and discovered a lovely bush walk, Nga Taonga, which took us up the stream to cross on a very sturdy bridge. We thoroughly enjoyed the tramp, getting up to the junction with McKerrow, then returning the same way. The weather was windy and cool with only one short period of hail. The stream had not covered the ford as we feared, but we were very pleased to discover the safe alternative
Weekend
M Multi Trip ‘Mangahao Flats Hut’ led by Sarah White, Sat-Sun 1-2/4
3 members overnighted at Mangahao Flats hut and walked out the same way. A bit of rain but very beautiful bush and river travel. Hut was in immaculate condition . Pleasant evening with fire and good food.
E/M Trip ‘Butcher Track/Cattle Ridge’ led by Jeanette Martin, Sun 02/4
A convivial group of eight TTC members enjoyed the popular Butcher Track/Cattle Ridge tramp and Judy spotted lots of interesting fungi. Prize for muddiest shorts went to Carol; prize for best slip on damp clay went to Muriel; No injuries I'm pleased to report. Overcast day turned into a summer's day. We finished with a stop for coffee and cake in Petone on our way home.
