Eastern Walkway, Tawa Circumnavigation, Kapakapanui Hut and Pukeatua Track
Wednesday 20th
E tramp over Eastern Walkway led by Alan Benge 6m
The walk started at Seatoun. Despite gusty Northerly winds, we were reasonably sheltered on our leisurely 8km walk along the cliffs overlooking Wellington’ South Coast.
There were fantastic views of Cook Strait. We found a sunny spot for a relaxed lunch overlooking the bays. A very pleasant mid-week tramp enjoyed by all.
M tramp circumnavigating Tawa led by John Allard 12
On 20 September 12 members enjoyed a 15km circuit around Tawa. Similar to a corresponding trip in 2022 the route linked up various reserves (Wilf Mexted, Woodburn, Redwood Bush) the Spicer Forest (via the Te Ngahere-o-Tawa track), local parks and cuts-through. Morning tea was at Willowbank park where 18 of these natives were spotted.
One poignant moment occurred in the Redwood Bush Reserve where we saw a bench dedicated to Jim’s brother-in-law, Gil Roper, who had passed away since the previous trip, for which he had been a strong supporter on behalf of the Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves.
SF loop tramp to Kapakapanui Hut and back to cars via Pukeatua track led by Janette Roberts 15m
A record FIFTEEN trampers assembled at South Mangaone at 8am. We traversed the private logging road, with permission, and picked up the ridge up to .755 on the Kapakapanui track. We were glad of the hut for an early lunch, as the cloud forest lived up to its name. The main focus of the day was to explore again the so-called Henderson track. There was a footpad and some markers at varying intervals, but significant tree fall made this two-kilometre section take more than one and a half hours with lots of team building as we explored solutions. Afternoon tea when we joined the Pukeatua track before a steep and slippery descent to the cars. Eight hours exactly.
