Waddington Winder/Berhampore Southern Loop/Orange Hut Plus/Remutaka Summit to Featherston/Mt Ruapehu

Wednesday

E Trip ‘Up Waddington Winder, down Te Whiti’ led by Anne Bond, Wed 25/10

Nine members made their way up Waddington Winder then down Te Whiti Riser. They enjoyed a fine day with wind that was an issue only when selecting a lunch spot. In spite of a much delayed start caused by bus replacement of the trains the four members from Wellington city managed to get home on a bus from Woburn station boarding just in time to ride free on Winston Peters’ card.

EM Trip ‘A Southern Loop from Berhampore’ led by Lainey Cowan, Wed 25/10

From Gramercy Bakery we ascended to the City to Sea walkway; walked through 2 reserves, texting Celia Wade Brown who was leading another tramp, from 'her' seat in Paekawakawa reserve. We descended to the Home of Compassion garden and cafe for a very peaceful lunch. After lunch we started up towards Mt Albert, pausing for 15 minutes of weedbusting a horrid infestation of climbing asparagus. The bags of weed were later collected by WCC workers! Only 2 summited Mt Albert, 3 others were drawn to goldcard buses.

M Trip ’Orange Hut plus’ led by David Ogilvie, Wed 25/10

Just after 9 am, 18 members started from Whareroa Farm, walked up the Catchment View Track and headed south along Campbell Mill Rd and Hydro Rd, arriving at Orange Hut a bit before noon for lunch. After lunch we walked another 20 min down Hydro Rd to Norms Crossing and headed up Whakatiki Rd. After about 500 m 8 medium fit people turned right on to a track that led to The Motorway where they turned left towards Titi. The rest continued up Whakatiki Rd to Titi Rd where 6 medium trippers turned left and headed back to the car park. The other 4 (slow fit) people turned right and walked towards Titi to meet the MF group. All up, people walked between 20-25 km, and ascended between 600 and 1000 m, mostly in or just under cool but dry cloud.

SF Trip ‘Remutaka Summit to Featherston’ led by Celia Wade-Brown, Wed 25/10

Celia was scheduled to lead Remutaka to Tauherenikau but considered it was far too windy on the tops. Gerald Leather, Huntaway Skye, and Celia enjoyed a shorter and sheltered trip from Bucks Road Campsite to the Tauherenikau River, turning off the route to Mt Frith. The path was clear and there was evidence of gorse cutting. An hour each way with morning tea and lunch. The seven hour trip from the summit will return in March, connecting with the train. Good regrowth of the bush with plenty of different orchids and young clematis plants.

Weekend

Trip ‘Mt Ruapehu’, led by Sarah White, Sat 28/10 – Sun 29/10

Fantastic weather, circumnavigating the base of Mt Ruapehu from Whakapapa Village to Turoa skifield. We drove up on Saturday morning and walked through to Whakapapaiti Hut for the night. On Sunday, half the group returned, via Silica Falls to pick up the van while the others walked through to the Ohakune Mountain road to be picked up by the others in the van. 9 members

Total 43 members and 0 non members.
