Te Marua – Harcourt Park/Butterfly Creek – Middle Ridge/Gollans Stream/The Wier - Ōrongorongo River/Skyline Walkway
Wednesday
Easy Trip ‘Te Marua to Harcourt Park’, led by David Campbell, Wed 24/7. 8M
The group enjoyed a warm and windless day and were able to take things very easily.
EM Trip ‘Butterfly Creek, Middle Ridge’, led by Jim Gibbons, Wed 24/7. 12M 1NM
This was a trip made for a winter’s day, no exposed ridges, no creeks to cross, no mud ponds, all of it in sheltered bush. But it didn’t matter as it was a perfect winter’s day, calm and sunny.
The plan was to go into Butterfly Creek behind Eastbourne using the less frequently used Bus Barn Track, then up the Middle Spur between Gollans Stream and Butterfly Creek to Hawtry Trig and then back to the Bus Barn track via the ridge and MacKenzie Track. 12 members, 1 non member and a dog turned up.
The climb up Middle Spur took longer than expected, the ground track was not always obvious and the trap line tags were intermittent. At an easy slow EM pace, with lots of chatter, stops to re group, stops for morning tea and lunch, it all added up to a 6 hour day.
Jim Gibbons (leader) Angela Vanderpoel, Ann Mcllroy, Diana Suggate, Paul Bruce, Bob Stephens, Lois Buckrell, Elizabeth Bridge, Alison Stephenson, Trish Gardiner-Smith, Phillipa Newton, Jeanette Martin and Emma.
M Trip ‘Gollans Stream’, led by Chris Ward, Wed 24/7. 10M
To Butterfly Creek via the Mckenzie track up the Gollans Stream to Elbow Creek, then a bit of a bash further up the stream before making for Middle Ridge. There followed a brief period of disorientation before we got out back to the stream. Down the stream to Butterfly Creek again, then to Fairy Gardens and up a ridge to join the Bus Barns Track and back along the coast to the cars. Three climbs exceeding 150 metres and near 6 hours in total.
SF Trip ‘The Weir/Ōrongorongo River’, led by Janette Roberts, Wed 24/7. 15M
We had a great day in top notch weather exploring the Wainuiomata water catchment. With permission we tramped up the Bridle track, cut up 50m from the highest point to join the East Whakanui near.800. We left it again after a short distance to follow a spur to the south of Telephone Creek, down to the old weir with its lawn and little house. Following a pleasant, sunny lunch we followed the Bridle track all the way out. Nine and a half hours, 22km, 1300m ascent.
M Trip ‘Skyline Walkway’, led by Sarah White, Sat 27 July 6M 4NM
From Johnsonville Railway Station we climbed up through Truscott Ave Reserve onto the Skyline and traversed along to Johnston's Hill and down to Karori Park. Great weather and views, with a fresh tail wind. Home for an early afternoon tea.
