Wednesday
E Trip ‘Khandallah/Kaukau tracks’ led by Michele Dickson, Wed 05/02 9M
In fine, calm weather, nine members enjoyed a day around the Khandallah Tarikākā/Kaukau tracks. Starting from Simla Crescent, we meandered across to the lookout diversion on the north ridge, then up to the skyline and north near to the Old Coach Rd. Another little diversion and a gentle walk back to Kaukau, using more alternatives put us in a good time spot for a return to where we started and public transport.
EM Trip ‘Windmills & Wetlands, Makara area’ led by Mary Perkins, Wed 05/02 18M/2NM
This was most enjoyable - a circular walk covering the Makara Walkway and the Opau Loop. The weather was amazing with no wind and clear skies and it took us just under 5 hours. Don't start this walk before 9am as one mile from the car park there is a metal barrier which isn't released until 9am.
M Trip ‘South Wellington Perspectives – a trial of two ridges’ led by John Willett, Wed 05/02 5M
We started at George Denton Park Highbury, walked to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine along the Zealandia Fence then down to Happy Valley Road via Car Parts and Tip tracks. We continued up to the Tawatawa Reserve and walked northward on the City to Sea Walkway to Tanera Park then down to Aro Street, Holloway Road and up to George Denton Park along the George Denton track. Fine warm weather. Tracks dry and in good condition.
SF Trip ‘Paraparaumu Scenic Reserve’ led by Peggy Munn, Wed 05/02 8M
Our trip started at the beautiful Barry Hadfield Nikau Reserve and entered the Paraparaumu Scenic Reserve via the pylon track. The trip featured many outstanding moments - wasp stings, slippery descents requiring a rope, fierce concentration on the major steep descent, a hip deep gorge wade, an unplanned exit when the leader chose the wrong turnoff and finally more wasp stings. All in all, a great day out.
MF Trip ‘Te Whakatūrākau Track, un-named creek to East Holdsworth’ led by Gerald Leather, Wed 05/02 8M
Eight of us enjoyed another great day navigating the stream that runs straight up the flanks of East Holdsworth to its source under the East Holdsworth gable end. The sun shone, the stream chattered and the bidibids had a field day being carried up the stream in huge numbers by us!
Weekend:
EM Trip ‘Mt Dick/Waiohine Ridge’ led by Dave Reynolds, Sat 08/02 2M
Two members enjoyed botanising the area around Mt Dick and some of the Waiohine Ridge. Conditions were warm and calm.
SF Trip ‘Mt Dick & the Waiohine Ridge & return’ led by Janette Roberts, Sat 08/02 10M
Our group enjoyed fabulous weather and lovely terrain on the trip towards Waiohine Peak. We stopped for lunch in a beautiful glade after 4 hours travel, then returned to Mt Dick, admiring and identifying many Tararua peaks en route.
