Baring Head, East Harbour/South Coast, Brooklyn Radome/Tararua Lodge

Wednesday

All ‘Tree Planting Baring Head, East Harbour’ led by Jane-Pyar Mautner , Wed 16/7 25M

On a picture perfect day, 25 members met at the Baring Head bridge car park at 9am. Following instruction from Greater Wellington Regional Council’s ranger, Zane, 180 new plants were secured in the damp ground. About 60 existing plants also had the weeds that were smothering them, cleared. A most successful and enjoyable day with the pristine backdrop of snow-covered Tapuae-o-Uenuku, vast blue and green sea and rolling green hills.

Weekend:

M Trip ‘South Coast, Brooklyn Radome’ led by Tim Stone, Sat 19/07 4M

This was a repeat of the Wednesday trip I ran on May 28th. The weather was perfect with not a rain cloud on the horizon so this time we were able to do the whole thing. We took the tip track up to Hawkins Hill and the Radome, descending then to Waipapa Gully. We followed the stream down to the junction and then we proceeded over to Sinclair Head and the bunkers taking the side route down to the South Coast.

From Red Rocks we followed the bike track up to a junction where a right hand turn took us down a track to the old quarry site. At the Owhiro Bay Information Center coffee and Cookies purchased from a caravan were most welcome. We continued along the Bay road and then on to the City to Sea walkway until we got back to where we started from. The trip took a bit longer than the scheduled 7 hours.

All ‘Tararua Lodge 70th Birthday’ trip led by Paul Maxim, 18 – 20/07 14M

14 members celebrated the 70th anniversary of the current lodge. The weather over the whole weekend on Ruapehu was superb and there were plenty of people out enjoying the sun. Walks were had, and a beautiful roast lamb dinner was enjoyed with several bottles of sparkling wine consumed. We all agreed to come back for the 100th.
