• RuamahangaValley . . . 2018 Apr 11 04:40 by John Thomson?: revision based on recent visit (+122)
 • MainRangeCrossing . . . 2018 Apr 09 20:46 by John Thomson?: minor change in times (-4)
 • MikimikiValley . . . 2018 Apr 09 20:21 by John Thomson?: Minor revision. (-53)
 • MangatainokaValley . . . 2018 Apr 08 23:37 by John Thomson?: Inwards: Proceed to the Herepai/Roaring Stag track junction 80 minutes from the Mangatainoka road-end as in 1.1. The ancient pack track formation then heads S along the ridge, sidling several small knobs and, at a large boulder on the ridge, drops down a gentle spur to the valley floor a little over an hour from the track junction. The local conglomerate rock on this spur is anomalously derived from granite highlands, some source distant from present-day New Zealand. Twenty minutes further, across bush terraces and a couple of small side-streams, is the delightfully situated Roaring Stag Lodge: 3 hours from the road-end. These side streams can be difficult after heavy rain. In high flow, the bigger northern stream is best crossed about 150m upstream of the track crossing, where it flattens out and flows across a flat terrace. [revised March 2018] (+26)
 • DundasCircuit . . . 2018 Apr 08 23:27 by John Thomson?: The Mangatainoka Herepai Dundas Cattle Ridge Roaring Stag Hut circuit tramp is a classic medium-fit two to three day trip that involves travel above the bush line. Some experience is required including navigation skills, appropriate equipment, and reasonable fitness. On recent maps, the ridge from Arete to West Peak is called Dundas Ridge. (+78)
 • TauherenikauValley . . . 2018 Apr 07 22:35 by John Thomson?: (+3)
 • OhauValley . . . 2018 Apr 07 03:17 by John Thomson?: Seventy-five metres inside the bush from the Park boundary steps, the track to Waiopehu climbs steeply for a few minutes to gain the spur-crest, then somewhat more gently thereafter. The branch track coming directly from the Blackwater Junction is passed after 50 minutes, and 30 minutes further brings a stream crossing. This was the site of an old track-work camp – 75 m along the spurlet on the TR. A good hour from the track-work stream brings the site of the now vanished Edwards Shelter. Beyond here the ridge undulates through the forest to reach an open clearing on the spur, the site of two previous huts, in about 80 min. The earliest hut was blown off the ridge in the 1936 storm, and its replacement was snuggled in the ridge-side hollow. A fringe of bush gives way to healthy scrub, and a good 30 min brings the new Waiopehu Hut. This light and spacious new hut sleeps 20 comfortably, and is about (Topo50 BN33 991 890, NZMS260 S25 091 507). Like other unheated huts above bushline, it may be cold in some seasons. (+21)

 • OtakiRiverSystem . . . 2018 Feb 20 02:34 by John Thomson?: Down: The track turn-off is some 250 metres beyond the end of the flat section of track S of Table Top, and 30 to 40 minutes from Field Hut. It is marked by a DOC sign. It heads at right angles from the main track, to where an iron standard will be seen. The route then follows the spur for a little before dropping steeply R down a face to gain a small indistinct spur that improves as it leads to the valley. The trail is currently well padded but still needs close attention above the bush-edge in snow conditions or in heavy fog or rain. At the spur-foot the trail crosses a side-stream then traverses high TL terraces to the hut in 20 minutes. (+20)
 • GorgeTrips . . . 2018 Feb 20 01:51 by John Thomson?: Useful contribution from Colin Cook (+145)
 • NorthernCrossing . . . 2018 Feb 02 02:35 by John Thomson?: From Te Matawai Hut the track drops softly past the old hut site, then rises to the bush-edge knob where the turn-off to Girdlestone Saddle is indicated, 15 minutes from the hut. Ninety minutes more of steady climbing brings Pukematawai. Two minutes short of the top of Pukematawai, the Main Range joins from the S: a junction worth noting. The Te Araroa trail turns off here and is signposted. In the reverse direction, the Main Range carries on straight ahead at this point, while the ridge to Te Matawai Hut turns NW. (+44)
 • WaingawaValley . . . 2018 Jan 11 21:15 by John Thomson?: Down: On the way down, the spur is a steep face for the first 50 metres of height, but is easy to follow once the humps are reached. At the tussock knoll, bear L past some cairns to pick up the track in the scrub. The route is clearly marked and well cut. [revised May 2017] (0)
 • HuttRiverSystem . . . 2017 Dec 18 01:27 by John Thomson?: This is a route, not a track. It traverses some of the ‘Maymorn territory’, see 11.5. After crossing the swing-bridge at the Pakuratahi Forks carpark and following the path for 200 or 300 metres to avoid supplejack thickets, the hill-face is climbed to gain a good spur that leads, in 2˝ hours or so, to the farther reaches of overgrown logging roads of the old Baigent Mill. Keeping to the N ridge beyond, the southernmost Clouston logging road may be picked up near .572. About 5 hours so far. From just beyond point 572 a ridge-crest extraction track runs towards .646 and the Maymorn logging road just before the hilltop. From here you may travel N to Maymorn Junction a little over 2 hours distant. Both the Baigent and Clouston extraction tracks are regenerating well nowadays, and a good eye is needed for unnatural ground formation. Total time will vary considerably according to bushcraft ability, but 7 hours would be a good time from Pakuratahi Forks to Maymorn junction. [revised December 2017] (+29)
 • HoldsworthRoad-end . . . 2017 Dec 09 21:10 by John Thomson?: Alternatively, from Mountain House shelter, the route travels towards the road-end for 10 minutes and, at the point where the Gentle Annie track climbs R towards Pig Flat, the River Track turns L. It descends through pleasant forest and is a well-padded trail with a gentle grade. (see 6.5) [revised November 2017] (-3)
 • NgatiawaWaikanaeAndMangaoneValley . . . 2017 Nov 13 20:23 by John Thomson?: Overview: These two minor valley systems, headwaters of the Waikanae River, contain the popular Mangaone Walkway, and tracks to Kapakapanui, Renata and Waiotauru. The infrequently visited Waikanae River branches contain considerable areas of lowland forest, much of it still in original condition. [revised November 2017] (+1)

‘IS there frost on my hair, comrade?

is there frost on my hair ?

’Tis the rime of the midnight wind that chills

my hunter's couch on the starlit hills,
crown for my youth to wear.

’Twill be gone with the morning light, comrade,

when I wind my morning horn.’
Geoffrey Winthrop Young, from Glamour of Life
