Although the first author of this Guide said it is a 'pleasant journey on a summer day', it is not to be undertaken lightly. Confidence in deep river crossing is required, and the bed under the river is changeable and mostly bouldery. But the many crossings can usually in summer flow be forded without recourse to sidling. And the deep pools above Sawmill Flat can be bypassed. Four hours between the Forks and Penn Creek junction in either direction, and another hour in the creek to the hut. # By travelling along the old TL gorge sidle track till past the grassy terrace on the other side and nearly opposite the next TR side-stream, then dropping steeply through tangled bush to the river as convenient. At normal water, travel up the river is then a series of crossings (but see note above). The travel up the bed of Penn Creek is straightforward apart from a short waist deep section in the gorge. At the active scree slip before Stream No. 5, cross level to the regenerating area, then drop to the stream just below a tiny fall. In the reverse direction here, there is a cairn at the down-valley bush-edge. This trail tends to be badly overgrown in the many open areas.

As of March 2025 the DoC website warns the Ōhau road-end to Blackwater Junction track is closed due to a slip. However, both of the two small slips encountered close to Blackwater Junction are readily crossed using a good footpad, although they may be slippery when wet.
