Categories are a folksonomy or collaborative classification or tagging of pages.
This classification allows readers of the website to locate pages of a similar nature.
In particular we classify trip location, trip type, and Tararua Tramper year.
The following practices are used as a guide to what a good category is
- where possible categories are singular
- categories start with a character (rather than a digit)
- location categories should identify a clear geographical area, close to Wellington this may be smaller and more specific than areas further away, simpy because there are more local trips and it makes sense to categorise them more finely
To maintain category pages
- on the Category home page where a category has a summary it has been accepted as worthwhile
- where there is no summary a decision needs to be made as to whether it is a new category, or can be categorised elsewhere
- if it is a reasonable category add a summary to the page by editing it
- if it is not a reasonable category (perhaps a duplicate or a spelling mistake) then
- change the category on the referenced pages
- delete the no longer required category page
